Aug 21 – Should Democrats Endorse Anti-abortion Candidates?

Please join us at our next meeting for a critical and timely discussion.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, as well as Independent Bernie Sanders, have suggested that the Democratic Party can support pro-abortion policies but tolerate pro-life candidates.

Should these anti-abortion Democrats receive monetary support and endorsement from elected Democrats and the Party itself? Should our own San Diego County Democratic Party consider endorsing such candidates?

Many feel that this betrays the base and reaffirms that women’s basic rights are negotiable and disposable. Many see it as the camel’s toe under the tent in the effort to repeal Roe v Wade.

“You cannot support women and stand for equality when you oppose abortion rights,” said liberal writer Swapna Krishna. “Full stop, end of story.”

Is this the correct choice to make in an effort to win more voters?

What do YOU think? Please bring your ideas regarding this to add to our discussion.

More in-depth information on this issue can be found in this Atlantic article, Should the Democratic Party Reject Pro-Life Candidates? by Clare Foran.
